When I launched this crazy experiment last week, I didn’t know what to expect. Within a few minutes, I got a message from Spencer in Boston. He loved the idea of One Dumb Card and wanted to help.
His trade offer? An autographed rookie card: the Carlos Narváez #90B2-CN from 2025 Topps Update’s 1990 Autographs set. 🤯
From Oil Can to a rookie auto! We couldn’t have asked for a better start. At the time of writing, the card has an average sales price of $8.25 - an 800% return!
Because this project is even more about the people behind the cards than the cards themselves, I asked Spencer to share a little about himself. As he says, “Trading and interacting with others who love the hobby is one of my favorite parts of collecting.”
What do you collect, and what’s your favorite card in your collection?
I collect baseball and football cards mostly, with some basketball mixed in. I’ve been collecting for over 30 years, and I look forward to sharing the hobby with my son when he’s older.
My favorite card in my collection is my Drake Maye Downtown. My dad was a huge Drake fan. Unfortunately, he passed unexpectedly in October. A few days after he passed, I got a few packs of Donruss on a whim, and I jokingly said, “Help me out with a Downtown here, Dad,” as I opened the first pack. When I looked down, the Drake Downtown was staring back at me. I know it’s just a crazy coincidence, but I’ll always think of him when I look at that card.
Why were you interested in this trade?
I saw your post on Reddit and thought it was a fun idea. I figured, why not take a shot at being the first trade? If you end up with something awesome, I can say I have the card that started it all. And if you don’t, we still got to have a cool interaction and some fun. Trading and interacting with others who love the hobby is one of my favorite parts of collecting.
Is there a story behind the card you traded?
I traded a Nico Hoerner Golden Mirror that I ripped for a few Red Sox rookies, which included this card.
What are your favorite sports teams?
Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and I also root for Detroit teams because my wife is from there.
Thank you for being so kind and generous to kick this off, Spencer! I couldn’t have asked for a better first trading partner.
One of the downsides of this project is that I have to actually, you know, trade the cards. I’m becoming quite attached to Carlos and the story behind this card, but the trades must continue. If you’re interested in owning this card and helping the project move forward, please reach out.
